How Does the Spray Rating Tester Work?
The Spray Rating Tester consists of a robust metal frame equipped with a nozzle that sprays distilled water onto a test sample placed 150 mm below it. The test is straightforward, easy to perform, and provides reliable, consistent results each time. This tester helps to determine how well fabrics can resist surface wetting from water, which is a critical feature for clothing and textiles exposed to rain or moisture.

Test Procedure
As outlined in AATCC 22, the following steps are taken to perform the Spray Rating Test:
Pre-conditioning: The fabric specimen must undergo humidifying treatment for at least 4 hours in an environment with a standard temperature of 21±1°C and a relative humidity of 65±2%.
Sample Setup: After conditioning, the fabric sample is mounted at a 45° angle using the specimen holder on the support frame.
Water Application: 50 ml of distilled water is poured into the funnel above the fabric at a steady rate, ensuring continuous drenching of the sample.
Observation: Once the water is used up, the specimen is examined to determine the degree of surface wetting.
Assessment: The spray rating is assigned based on the extent of wetting. The sample is evaluated on the following scale:
Spray Rating Scale
ISO 0 / AATCC 0: Complete wetting of the entire fabric face.
ISO 1 / AATCC 50: Complete wetting of the entire fabric face, extending beyond the spray points.
ISO 2 / AATCC 70: Partial wetting beyond the spray points.
ISO 3 / AATCC 80: Wetting at the spray points only.
ISO 4 / AATCC 90: Slight random sticking or wetting at several points.
ISO 5 / AATCC 100: No wetting or sticking of the fabric.
Test Results
The test results should provide the following key information:
Test Procedure Illustration: A detailed diagram or description of the test setup and procedure according to the standard.
Atmospheric Conditions: Temperature and humidity conditions during testing.
Water Temperature: The temperature of the water used in the test.
Spray Rating: The assigned spray rating for each fabric specimen tested.
Experimental Date: The date on which the test was conducted.
