XD-B29 Schildknecht Flexing Tester

The Schildknecht Flexing Tester is specifically engineered to evaluate the durability of coated fabrics under flexing stress. It simulates repeated bending actions at a rate of 500 cycles per minute, allowing for precise assessment of fabric wear and tear. The tester can hold up to 10 specimens at once and is equipped with a resettable electronic counter to track the number of flexing cycles performed during each test.

What is the Schildknecht Flexing Tester?

The Schildknecht Flexing Tester is an advanced machine used to assess how coated fabrics endure damage due to flexing, which occurs from oscillation at 500 cycles per minute. The machine is capable of accommodating up to 10 fabric specimens at once, and it features a resettable electronic counter to record the total number of cycles each specimen undergoes during the test.

This machine is essential for testing the compression-folding (Schildknecht) flex cracking resistance of medical protective clothing. If the fabric passes the flex cracking test, it is then subjected to further evaluation using the Hydrostatic Head Tester to assess its resistance to water penetration under pressure.

Additionally, ASTRAND offers flexing machines for other methods, including Method A (Demattia Flexing Method) and Method C (Crumple/Flex Method), each tailored for different types of fabric testing.

Test principle:

A rectangular strip of coated fabric is placed around two opposing cylinders so that the sample is cylindrical. One of the cylinders reciprocates along its axis to alternately compress and relax the coated fabric cylinder, causing folds in the specimen. This folding of the coated fabric cylinder is continued until a predetermined number of cycles or until the specimen shows significant failure.

How Does the Schildknecht Flexing Tester Work?

The test evaluates the flexing resistance of coated fabrics by simulating repetitive flexing movements. Here's a breakdown of the process:

  • Specimen Setup: A rectangular strip of coated fabric is mounted onto two opposing cylinders, which gives the fabric a cylindrical shape.
  • Oscillation: One cylinder moves reciprocally along its axis, causing the fabric to alternate between compression and relaxation.
  • Test Continuation: The flexing continues until the fabric reaches a pre-set number of cycles or until the specimen shows visible damage such as cracking or breaking.

This process simulates the wear and tear a fabric would undergo in real-life applications, especially for garments and materials that experience continuous bending and movement.

Test Procedure for Schildknecht Flexing Tester

To begin testing with the Schildknecht Flexing Tester, follow these steps:

  1. Specimen Preparation:
  2. Test Setup:
  3. Examine Results:

Analyzing Flexing Damage

After the flexing test, you need to evaluate the condition of the fabric based on the visible damage. Key factors to assess include wrinkling, cracking, flaking, and discoloration. You can then compare the test specimens with the untested material to determine the extent of the damage. The fabric is scored on a scale of 0 to 3 based on the following criteria:

  • 0 - None: No visible damage.
  • 1 - Slight: Minor visible damage.
  • 2 - Moderate: Noticeable damage but not critical.
  • 3 - Severe: Significant damage, potentially rendering the fabric unusable.

Additionally, if damage occurs, note the type and extent of the damage, such as cracking, delamination, or other forms of degradation.

Conclusion

The Schildknecht Flexing Tester plays a crucial role in assessing the flex cracking resistance of coated fabrics, particularly those used in medical and protective gear. By simulating repetitive flexing motions, this test helps manufacturers determine the long-term durability of their materials. By following the test procedure and carefully analyzing the results, you can ensure that the fabric meets the necessary standards for performance and safety.
