XD-B23 Wyzenbeek or Oscillatory Abrasion Tester

Wyzenbeek Abrasion Tester is a handy instrument for abrasion resistance of textile, leather and imitation leather, which is in accordance with the standard ASTM D4157.

Product introduction:

The Wyzenbeek Abrasion Tester is an essential tool for evaluating fabric durability through abrasion resistance testing. Tailored to meet the needs of fabric manufacturers in the automotive and furniture industries, this reliable instrument ensures high-performance materials for demanding applications.


Equipped with four abrasion heads and an electronic digital counter, the tester provides precise control over cycle counts for consistent and accurate results. Additionally, it complies fully with the ASTM D4157 standard, ensuring its suitability for industry-specific quality assessments.


Working principle:

Install the strip-shaped sample fabric on the front and rear fixtures of the friction head and apply a certain tension force, install the friction medium on the arc-shaped friction table, make the sample contact the friction medium and apply a certain load to the sample superior. The friction table swings back and forth to rub the sample, and after a certain number of frictions, the change of the fracture strength of the sample is evaluated.

Wyzenbeek vs. Martindale: A Comparative Guide

Wyzenbeek Method

In North America, the Wyzenbeek Method is the standard for evaluating a fabric’s abrasion resistance. During the test, a stiff cotton cloth is placed over a machine and rubbed against a fabric sample to simulate wear from everyday use, such as sitting on a seat cushion.

  • Testing Process: Each forward and backward motion equals one rub.

  • Test End Criteria: The test concludes when the fabric exhibits visible wear, two yarn breaks, or reaches 15,000 double rubs—a threshold often considered excessive for domestic use.

Martindale Method

The Martindale Method is widely adopted in Europe and Asia and is often regarded as more precise than the Wyzenbeek test.

  • Testing Process: The fabric sample is laid flat and subjected to a figure-eight motion against a piece of smooth woolen cloth.

  • End Criteria: The test measures the number of cycles the fabric withstands before showing signs of wear.

Industry Recognition

Both methods are officially recognized by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), making them reliable standards for fabric abrasion testing worldwide.

Conversion: Martindale to Wyzenbeek

The conversion ratio between the two methods is approximately 4:3, with their units being equivalent.

    20,000 Martindale = 15,000 Wyzenbeek, often used as the benchmark for heavy-duty domestic upholstery.
